This volume presents a historical and philosophical introduction to some of the major theories of argumentation developed in the second half of the twentieth century. Following the nexus between argumentation and formal logic as a common thread, the text aims to illustrate some of the most important theoretical traditions of the last fifty years: from Perelman's Nouvelle Rhétorique, to Toulmin's theory of arguments, to the argumentative developments of Grice's conversational logic and Austin and Searle's theory of language acts, to Habermas's communicative pragmatics, and Walton and Krabbe's theory of Interpersonal Reasoning.
