Abstract :

In each of the three articles he published successively in 1800, 1801 and 1802 in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London – the first on a theory of sound, the second on a theory of the eye and the third on the theory of light and color – Thomas Young outlined the law of refraction; each time in a different form. Moreover, the third version of this law led to two corollaries, the second of which, concerning the spatial distribution of ether, is particularly cryptic. The present article aims at gathering and comparing these three versions of Young's law of refraction, in order to give an account of the reasons for the evolution of its text, as well as of the meaning to be attributed to the corollaries derived from its last version.
